16 Things You Wish You Knew About Exercise During Pregnancy

Exercise is something that we all know is good for us, yet the motivation to exercise seems to disappear so easily. It could be the new season of that Netflix show, a long day at work or even the sight of a single cloud in the sky that could mean rain (better play it safe, right?). Whatever the excuse, these 16 (proven) amazing reasons to exercise during pregnancy will definitely get you off the couch and feeling 100 times better for doing it.

  1. Reduced insomnia. Better sleep during pregnancy is invaluable.

  2. Reduced incidence of stress, anxiety and depression. Exercise releases endorphins (hormones that boost your mood).

  3. Reduced chance of gestational diabetes.

  4. Reduced chance of pre-eclampsia

  5. Reduced chance of caesarean section and instrumental deliveries.

  6. Less likely to get pelvic girdle pain or general discomfort. Exercise will improve your muscle strength and joint stability.

  7. Less chance of incontinence. Work on those pelvic floor exercises, here's how.

  8. Improvement in cardio vascular fitness. This will improve your endurance during birth as well.

  9. Significantly shortens labour. Cant argue with that.

  10. Less chance of Rectus Diastasis Abdominis (gap between tummy muscles after giving birth).

  11. Reduced risk of pre-term labour.

  12. Maintains health weight and prevents obesity in pregnancy.

  13. More positive pregnancy experience.

  14. Muscles maintain length and flexibility. Muscles change a lot during pregnancy, exercise helps to maintain them.

  15. Improves coordination and breathing control. Super useful for labour.

  16. Faster recovery postnataly. Who doesn't want that?

Its really important to do the right type and amount of exercise for your body and pregnancy. Always check with your Midwife or Doctor before starting any exercises during.

Everyone is different, remember not to compare your pregnancy journey with others.
