Changes After Birth

If you have had a baby then you're probably aware that your body doesn't quite go straight back to normal after you give birth *understatement*.

Here are some of the biological changes that will definitely impact you after your baby is born.

  • The changes to the shape of your body and posture can persist for up to 4-6 weeks after delivery.

  • Your uterus can take about 6 weeks to return to its normal size

  • Ligaments continue to be lax for up to 5 months

  • Oestrogen levels decrease immediately after birth - but increase after 2 weeks in breast feeding mothers (check out our blog post on Hormones to see how this can affect you).

These changes that last after you have given birth can explain why some women still get pelvic, back, hip or SDP (Symphysis Pubis Diastisis) pain after delivery. Its important to do the right exercises for you during this time, to regain and strengthen your core and abdominal muscles. You should be careful and aware of the changes in your body, so that you aren't over working while your body is still recovering.
