Maternity belts can be a really helpful tool if you are suffering with pregnancy related low back, hip or pelvis pain, including SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction).
What do they actually do?
Maternity belts help to support the weight of your bump when you're standing up; they relieve the pressure onto your back and pelvis.
A maternity belt can also encourage good posture, when your bump grows bigger it becomes more difficult to maintain a good upright position as your muscles fatigue quicker. The belt can support your back and encourage you into a more upright position.
During pregnancy hormones are released that help to relax the ligaments in your body ready for birth, this can contribute to muscle fatigue and joint pain. The maternity belt can act as a support around the pelvis also.
Be Careful
Don’t wear a maternity belt when sitting down, just release the straps and tighten back up when standing.
If the maternity belt feels uncomfortable then try to readjust the position. Don’t wear the belt if it’s causing discomfort.
Some women just don’t like the feeling of a maternity belt – that is OK. There are plenty of other ways to help manage your pain.
Remember that your bump is only going to get bigger, so make sure you purchase a size that will still fit you a few weeks down the line.
