SPD (Symphysis Pubis Diastisis)

We hear a lot about SPD, but what actually is it? You'll be a pro in no time, we've go the 'need-to-know' info right here.

SPD (Symphysis Pubis Diastisis) is the separation of the Symphysis (gap at the front of the pelvis).

It can only truly be diagnosed by a scan (after pregnancy)

Symptoms include:

  • Pain at the front of the pelvis, usually when walking, standing on one leg, using stairs, turning in bed.

  • Sometimes leaking from your bladder when going from lying to sitting.

SPD usually occurs because of a combination of factors, including; increased pressure onto the pelvis from the baby, softening of smooth muscle and relaxation of ligaments (due to hormones) and postural changes.

SPD is classified as Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP). For more types of PGP visit the blog.
